About the Partial Hospitalization Program at Newport Hospital

The Partial Hospitalization Program at Newport Hospital is designed to help adults of all ages who are struggling with mental and behavioral health issues, such as depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder and substance use disorders. The program offers patients a structured treatment environment during the day, while enabling them to return home at night and on weekends. Patients can maintain relationships and enjoy the comfort, convenience and privacy of their own homes, while also benefiting from intensive therapy.

Partial hospitalization can be an effective alternative to inpatient treatment, for those patients who do not require that level of care, or can help patients transition to home after an inpatient stay.

The partial hospitalization program offers two distinct tracks: one for patients addressing mental health issues, and a new track for patients dealing with co-occurring substance use and mental health issues.

Both tracks are designed to stabilize patients and improve their functioning.

About the Program

Newport Hospital’s partial hospitalization program is a short-term, group-based, comprehensive outpatient treatment program. Groups vary, and activities are built around individual treatment plans.  For example, some patients might require social and life-skill groups; some may need to focus on coping with addiction; and others might benefit from expressive arts. Some patients require more individual therapy than others, and that is determined by both the initial assessment and the ongoing evaluation of each patient.

The average program duration is from one to two weeks, depending on individual patient needs, and runs six hours a day, five days a week. Intake includes medical and psychiatric evaluation, including psychotropic medication assessment, and individual sessions with the psychologist, social worker or mental health counselor to manage therapeutic issues. Patients are expected to participate fully in their treatment.

The Partial Hospital Program Team

The partial hospitalization program brings together a multidisciplinary team that includes psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, mental health counselors, and recreational therapists. Team members offer expertise in both mental health and substance use disorders, and the emphasis is on restoring a patient's health and emotional stability and preventing setbacks. Each patient is considered an important part of his or her team.
