About the Lifespan Cancer Institute
Cancer Services
The Lifespan Cancer Institute at Rhode Island, The Miriam, Newport and Hasbro Children's hospitals provides the most current cancer diagnosis and treatment options. Our world-renowned physicians and specialists form multidisciplinary teams, both in the hospitals and at the Lifespan Ambulatory Care Center in East Greenwich. Their collective level of knowledge and experience is unparalleled in the region.
Additional experts–including nurses, nurse navigators, pharmacists, social workers, and nutritionists–work with patients and their families to ensure complete care from diagnosis through recovery.
An Emerging Approach for Treatment
After decades of research in cancer treatment, physicians and researchers are touting the benefits of a new defense against cancer. Precision medicine is a personalized and targeted approach for disease treatment and prevention. It takes into account the individual variability in genes, environment and lifestyle for each patient.
Two notable areas of precision medicine that we have integrated into our practice are immunotherapy and molecularly targeted treatment. The Lifespan Cancer Institute currently has a number of investigational studies to further explore these treatments. Our efforts focus on accelerating the progress of research by developing the right strategies and giving our patients the best possible outcomes through the latest treatments.
Cancer Research and Clinical Trials
The Lifespan Cancer Institute is an active clinical trials site, committed to providing patients with the latest protocols. Our patients have access to groundbreaking new immunotherapies and other new and emerging cancer treatments at various stages of diagnosis and across many cancer types.
Cancer treatments include the latest chemotherapy, biologic agents, radiation oncology, surgery, and image-guided procedures—many of which are not available elsewhere in New England. Our physicians actively participate in the Brown University Oncology Group, a unique regional clinical trials network that provides highly innovative approaches to cancer care.

Art
It was after playing tennis with friends one Sunday in January 2016 that the pleasant rhythm of Art's full life came to a sudden halt.
