Welcome to the Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Program at Hasbro Children’s Hospital. We offer comprehensive patient- and family-centered care, and innovative treatments to pediatric and young adult hematology and oncology patients. As an academic affiliate of The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University, we teach, pursue local and national clinical research, and partner with community health organizations to improve and protect the health of Rhode Island and its surrounding communities.

Blood Disorders

We diagnose and treat a wide range of conditions affecting all blood cell lines, such as red blood cell, white blood cell or platelets, ranging from benign to catastrophic conditions. Examples include:

  • Inherited
    • Clotting disorders
    • Hemoglobinopathies (sickle cell, thalassemia)
    • Hemophilia
    • Iron disorders
    • Neutropenia
  • Acquired
    • Aplastic anemia
    • Auto immune cytopenias
    • Bone marrow failure
    • Immunogenic Thrombocytopenia (ITP)
    • Nutritional anemias
    • Thromboses

Our Hemostasis and Thrombosis Center is a distinct program with a specialized focus on bleeding and clotting disorders for pediatric and adult patients.

Our Edwin N. Forman Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Center is located on the first floor of Hasbro Children’s Hospital at 593 Eddy Street, Providence.

Our team of specialized oncologists diagnoses and treats a wide range of childhood cancers including:

  • Brain tumors
  • Leukemia and lymphomas
  • Solid tumors including neuroblastoma, bone tumors and other soft tissue malignancies
  • Other rare tumors

After completion of oncology therapy, patients are followed by our CHAMPS program (Comprehensive Health Assessment and Management Program) for long term surveillance for disease recurrence and/or treatment-related toxicities.

Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Team

Our team includes board-certified pediatric hematology/oncology physicians who work closely with other hospital specialists including surgeons, palliative care, etc. Other multidisciplinary team members include nurse practitioners, physician assistants, nurses, social workers, psychologists, registered dietitians, rehabilitation therapists, pharmacists, child life specialists, and parent consultants.

In addition, we train medical students, residents and pediatric hematology/oncology fellows from The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University, as well as trainees visiting from outside institutions vetted through our institutional credentialing office.

Our collaboration and leadership within the national Children's Oncology Group and membership in the Dana-Farber Leukemia Consortium give our patients access to the most up-to-date national cooperative group therapies.

Our dedicated doctors are available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. We treat patients in our pediatric emergency room, outpatient clinic, or inpatient service at Hasbro Children's Hospital. Our goal is to offer individualized approaches that incorporate trusted scientific evidence and innovative ideas. We strive to allow and support families to make the best choices for their child. By offering local services we attempt to minimize time spent at the hospital and maximize family time at home.
