Trauma and Inflammation Research

The department of surgery's Division of Surgical Research is focused on the basic science areas of inflammation and trauma. Evidence of the division's commitment to these topics is shown by the nine active R01 grants awarded from the National Institutes of Health built upon specific aims directly related to questions in basic inflammation. In July 2004, the division was awarded a five-year trauma and inflammation research training grant, which serves to strengthen current efforts to train the next generation of physician-scientists in inflammation.

Research Symposium

Beginning in 2003, the Division of Surgical Research has sponsored annual "Advances in Inflammation Research" symposiums. These events include lectures from outstanding investigators in the field of inflammation, presentations by junior research faculty members, and "Meet the Professor" sessions. In addition to recruiting exceptional speakers from around the country, the division has also attracted investigators from regional research institutions including Harvard, Yale, University of Rhode Island, University of Massachusetts and Brown University-affiliated hospitals. Interactions with our faculty members and attendees have resulted in collaborative studies with members of the Brown University medical community.
