Craniofacial and Cleft Repair
The treatment of patients with facial abnormalities has been a cornerstone of plastic surgery services at Rhode Island Hospital for more than 50 years. The Craniofacial center treats other facial abnormalities including orbital fractures, nasal fractures, and facial lumps and bumps such as moles and skin tags. Some procedures might require cosmetic surgery. Other areas of clinical expertise include:
- Cleft lip and palate repair
- Jaw reconstruction
- Ophthalmologic surgery
The department of plastic surgery coordinates the expertise of all associated disciplines, including pediatrics, genetics, hearing and speech, dentistry, orthodontics, nursing, neurosurgery, otolaryngology, ophthalmology and psycho-social services.
The Cleft Palate/Craniofacial Center was established so pediatric patients could be evaluated and treated by a multidisciplinary group of specialists. Today, it continues to make the highest quality care possible for infants, children, adolescents and adults with cleft and craniofacial anomalies.
