Samuels Sinclair Dental Center

Residency Program

Sameuls Residency
The Joseph S. Sinclair General Practice Residency at the Samuels Sinclair Dental Center opened in 2006.

The Samuels Sinclair Dental Center is located on the campus of Rhode Island Hospital in Providence, Rhode Island. The dental center is home to Rhode Island Hospital’s Division of Dentistry and Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, which is affiliated with The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University. There are three resident positions available for the 12-month program.

Graduate Medical Education at Lifespan and Brown University

Lifespan is committed to sponsoring outstanding residency and fellowship programs in an academic medical center that provides high quality, comprehensive, and compassionate health care.

Rotations and clinical experience provide diverse educational experiences at the program. Residents will rotate through Rhode Island Hospital’s departments of anesthesiology, emergency medicine, and internal medicine. Hasbro Children’s Hospital provides experience in pediatric emergency medicine, pediatric anesthesia and pediatric sedation. During these rotations the residents gain experience with physical diagnosis, dental and hospital admissions, conscious and IV sedation, and learn a multi-disciplinary approach to dental care. Residents also have the opportunity to rotate through private practice locations in general dentistry, endodontics, periodontics and oral and maxillofacial surgery. They have the opportunity to partake in craniofacial surgeries with the multidisciplinary craniofacial team.

Residents participate in an extensive academic program in addition to their clinical experiences. These academic opportunities include patient care conferences, seminars and lectures by Samuels Sinclair Dental attending faculty and other dental professionals from the region, grand round presentations offered through the Lifespan hospital network, continuing education programs sponsored by the Rhode Island Dental Association, Providence Dental Study Club (a chapter of the Seattle Study Club), and other community services and advocacy programs on the state and local levels. In addition, residents will gain teaching experience with medical residents and Brown University medical students.

Who We Are

Perspectives on life as a resident or fellow at Lifespan and Brown University.

The Samuels Sinclair Dental Center opened its doors in 1931 with a mission to ensure children whose parents could not afford to pay would be provided with adequate dental care. In addition to providing dental care to children, we are the primary dental provider for patients of all ages with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities. Furthermore, we provide dental care to a large adult patient population.

The Samuels Sinclair Dental Center is Rhode Island’s oldest dental practice and one of the first in the country to provide comprehensive dental care within a hospital setting. We see dental referrals from various clinics (transplant, oncology, hematology, and cardiology/cardiothoracic surgery) in the hospital and from the emergency room and internal medicine teams. We provide comprehensive treatment including preventive, diagnostic, restorative, periodontics, prosthodontics, endodontics, oral surgery, orthodontics and emergency dental services.
