Intensive Care Services

Information for Families

Upon admission of your loved one to the TICU, please identify the patient's spokesperson.

  • The spokesperson will serve as a liaison between the TICU staff and the patient's family and friends.
  • To protect the patient's privacy, the spokesperson is the only person who is permitted to call the TICU directly for an update on the patient's condition.
  • Because other individuals will not be given detailed information about a patient, it's the spokesperson's responsibility to relay information to the patient's family and friends.
  • Individuals other than the spokesperson can call Rhode Island Hospital's patient information department at 401-444-5421 for a general patient condition update.

Please take your loved one's belongings home, with the exception of his or her dentures, hearing aids and glasses.

Leaving the TICU

Once your loved one no longer needs intensive care, he or she will be transferred to a general care unit. Your TICU nurse will help make this transition easier for you and your loved one.

Leaving the hospital

Each patient is assigned a nurse case manager who will arrange his or her discharge to a rehabilitation facility or to his or her home. The patient's nurse case manager will contact his or her spokesperson a couple of days after admission to the TICU.
