MyLifespan

MyLifespan for Children and Teens

A MyLifespan portal for children and teens allows them to be more active in their care, while still protecting their privacy.

For children age 12 and under, parents can remain up-to-date with their child’s medical care. They will be able to view and make appointments, review laboratory and imaging results, communicate securely with their providers and care teams, manage their health information, and much more.

For teens age 13 to 17, except in rare circumstances, a parent’s view of these features is normally limited. The reason for this restriction is that Lifespan is committed to protecting the confidentiality of our teenage patients’ health information while at the same time recognizing the rights of parents and guardians. If your teen has a severe intellectual impairment and you believe that you should have full access to their portal, please contact their primary care provider to discuss your request.

How to Enroll Your Child or Teen in MyLifespan and Proxy Access Details

If the child is 12 years old or younger

Parents can request a MyLifespan portal for themselves, and as proxy can link to have “full access” to their child’s health information.

Full access includes the ability to:

  • View information about your child including demographics, allergies, medication, medical conditions, and more.
  • Receive information on upcoming appointments, tests, and procedures.
  • Communicate with and receive messages from your child’s provider(s).
  • Ask customer service questions.
  • View appointment and procedure notes from providers and other clinicians.
  • See test and imaging results.
  • Complete appointment information in advance and in some cases schedule appointments directly.
  • View billing information and make payments.
  • Take advantage of numerous additional features that are updated and enhanced frequently.

If the teen is between the ages of 13 and 15 years old

Parents can request a MyLifespan portal for themselves and a portal for their teen, with the parent as a proxy; a parent MyLifespan portal is required in order to become a proxy for a teen. This gives the parent limited access to their teen’s health information. This limited access is designed to protect the confidentiality of the teen’s health information.

If you are between 13 and 15 years old, your access includes the ability to:

  • View demographics, allergies, medication, medical conditions, and more.
  • Receive information on upcoming appointments, tests, and procedures.
  • Communicate with and receive messages from your provider(s).

Limited access for parents includes the ability to:

  • Ask a customer service question.
  • View allergies.
  • View immunizations.
  • Receive information on upcoming appointments, tests, and procedures.
  • View and update insurance information.
  • View billing information and make payments (done on the parent or guardian’s portal billing page, not when accessing the child’s page).

If the teen is 16 or 17 years old

At 16 years old, a teen can have their own MyLifespan portal without parental/guardian consent. This is allowed by Rhode Island law, which recognizes that patients 16 and above can access their health care information and have the right to make their own health care decisions.

Teens may choose to grant a proxy to their parent with full or limited access (with the above noted specifics).

  • Limited access proxy can be requested within a teen’s MyLifespan portal.
  • For full access proxy, please refer to the "How to Activate Your Account" section, detailed below.

It is important for teens in this age group to recognize that by granting their parent/guardian full access to their MyLifespan portal, they are allowing their parent/guardian to see their appointments and also note content, specifically what was discussed during their appointments including behavioral health sessions, reproductive health, and information from all other appointments (and hospital admissions).

Next Steps

To ensure the security of the child or teen’s health information, and to ensure their privacy, both parents and teens must read and agree to the below applicable information prior to requesting a MyLifespan portal. You will each be asked to sign the appropriate document at an in-person visit, or to attest that you have read it and agree to its terms if offered a remote sign-up option, when you activate the child’s/teen’s portal.

Next, simply call one of our pediatric MyLifespan activation specialists at the location where the child or teen receives care (below) to set up a MyLifespan portal for themselves and the parent proxy. You will be informed when you call whether an in person visit is required or a remote sign up option exists.

How to Activate Your Account

Lifespan is pleased to now offer either an in-person or remote video method to sign up for your child or teen’s MyLifespan account and proxy. An in-person sign up can be completed as part of a regular office visit or by scheduling a separate appointment for MyLifespan activation.
