A cochlear implant is an electronic medical device that replaces the function of the damaged inner ear. Unlike hearing aids, which make sounds louder, cochlear implants do the work of damaged parts of the inner ear (cochlea) to provide sound signals to the brain.

It’s important to know that cochlear implantation is a journey, not just a procedure. We guide you through the process so you can make well-informed decisions about options available to you or your child to achieve enhanced communication.

Speech perception testing, speech-language/communication evaluation, and speech-language and auditory rehabilitation therapy all are part of the services provided to cochlear implant patients.

Preparation for cochlear implantation requires an audiological evaluation, which includes conventional testing and sedated auditory brainstem response and other specialized tests for the diagnosis of hearing loss. Our team will provide an evaluation and fitting for hearing aids and other assistive listening devices.

A referral from a physician is needed for cochlear implantation assessment or services. The form should be faxed to our department at 401-444-6212. We will contact you to arrange an appointment.

Hearing Aid/Assistive Device Dispensing Program

Lifespan provides comprehensive audiological services to children and adults with various degrees of hearing loss. We also offer fitting of all types of hearing aids and assistive listening devices.

Before a hearing aid is dispensed, patients receive an audiological evaluation which includes conventional testing and sedated auditory brainstem response  and other specialized tests of middle and inner ear function.

This is followed by a hearing aid evaluation, fitting, and trial along with ear mold impressions and fitting. Speech-language evaluations will be arranged with our speech/language pathology department.

To make an appointment, we require a physician’s referral, which can be faxed to our center at 401-444-6212.
