Rhode Island Hospital is nationally recognized for its superior critical care services, and is a multi-year recipient of the Beacon Award for Critical Care Excellence, the most prestigious award possible for critical care nursing. Critical care units at the hospital include: 

The Miriam Hospital offers a 16-bed  ICU, also the recipient of a Beacon Award for Critical Care Excellence, where physicians and nurses work together with many other disciplines to care for the critically ill. The physician team consists of three ICU attending physicians, who oversee the practice of fellows and residents; expert hospitalists are also part of the team. In addition, the unit may host patients who are cared for by the cardiology service. Nurses on the unit are specially trained in critical care concepts and technology and many have national certification in critical care.

Newport Hospital offers an eight-bed ICU staffed by registered nurses who have specialized training in intensive care and by board-certified physicians, including hospitalists, cardiologists, intensivists, and pulmonologists. Newport Hospital has been awarded Magnet designation for the excellence of its nursing care.
