Vanzetta V. James, DNP, MBA, is senior vice president of patient care services and chief nursing officer at The Miriam Hospital. Dr. James leads activities for the provision of safe, high quality patient care, and is responsible for integrating, facilitating, and evaluating professional nursing practice standards of excellence. She works with nursing leadership to ensure the successful implementation of nursing strategic objectives, to sustain excellence in clinical outcomes, and ensure a positive patient experience.
Prior to joining The Miriam, Dr. James was the senior vice president and chief nursing officer with the University of Maryland Capital Region Health. She served in a variety of progressive leadership roles at Northeast Georgia Medical Center, University of Maryland Medical Center, and John Hopkins Community Care. She has extensive experience in academic environments with a keen focus on professional development, coaching, and mentoring.
Her clinical background is in critical care, emergency and ambulatory nursing. She oversaw the initiation of a critical care unit for patients requiring lung rescue/extracorporeal membrane oxygenation as well as intermediate care areas for both stroke and trauma. She has led efforts in achievement of the American Association of Critical Care Nurses Beacon Award for Excellence and has experience leading nursing in a Magnet environment.
Dr. James is certified in critical care nursing as well as nursing executive practice. She is a member of the American Association of Critical Care Nurses, Sigma Theta Tau, American Organization for Nursing Leadership, and a life member of the National Scholars Honor Society.
Dr. James earned her doctor of nursing practice degree in leadership from Quinnipiac University, a master of business administration from the University of Baltimore, and a master of science health services leadership and management at the University of Maryland School of Nursing.
