Speech and Language Pathology Services

A comprehensive diagnostic evaluation is performed with patients prior to beginning any treatment services to assess all aspects of speech and language functioning. Recommendations are provided to the patient, family and referring professionals following the evaluation.

Speech and language pathology services offered at Morton Hospital include:

Speech, Language and Fluency Program

Speech, language and fluency (i.e. stuttering) intensive short-term treatment is offered to children and adults following assessment. These difficulties may be related to medical conditions such as stroke, traumatic brain injury, hearing impairment, cleft lip/palate, autism spectrum disorder and others. Each session is individualized, focusing on functional goals for each patient, with an emphasis on family participation/input and increasing self-awareness and self-correction.

Hospital-Based Programs

We provide evaluation and therapy services to the Elder Behavioral Health Services (EBHS) Unit and acute care units at Morton Hospital. Encompassing the disciplines of speech-language pathology, physical therapy, dietary, occupational therapy, social services, nursing and medicine, our team is available to inpatients who have medical conditions that require a multidisciplinary treatment plan while in the hospital. Disciplines evaluate the patient and provide treatment prior to discharge from the hospital. Post-hospital care is also arranged.

Swallowing/Feeding/Dysphagia Program

Swallowing or feeding problems in adults and children can be assessed and treated by a speech and language pathologist and other dysphagia team members as needed. Assessment may include an outpatient feeding evaluation (pediatric) or a radiologic examination (adult) such as a modified barium swallow. Specific follow-up recommendations are given.

Voice Disorder Program

Specialized evaluation and treatment sessions are available to individuals experiencing voice problems frequently related to vocal cord lesions, vocal cord paralysis, and breathing dysregulation. Voice disorders may be characterized by hoarseness, raspiness, improper use of pitch, loudness or breathing, and other factors. Frequently used as an alternative to surgery, voice therapy helps the patient learn to conserve and properly use the speaking voice.

Aural Rehabilitation Program

For children who are born with a hearing impairment, or lose their hearing and are seeking to develop or improve verbal communication skills, auditory oral therapy is offered. This program targets use of  residual/amplified hearing (either with a cochlear implant or hearing aids) to learn to use verbal language, understand spoken language and produce intelligible speech.
