School of Medical Technology Admission Information

To Apply

Selection of students is made first from applicants enrolled in the medical laboratory science programs at the following affiliated schools:
  • University of Rhode Island
  • Salve Regina University
  • Rhode Island College

Consideration is then given to applicants who have received appropriate college level credits in biology and chemistry from non-affiliated schools. If all other factors are equal, preference will be given to Rhode Island residents.

The program does not grant advanced standing to applicants with prior clinical experience.

Basic Admission Criteria


  • Minimum overall GPA of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale is required. 
  • Minimum math/science GPA of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale is required. 

Required Coursework

  • 16 semester hours (24 quarter hours) of chemistry courses. one semester of organic chemistry is required, and one semester of biochemistry is required. 
  • 16 semester hours (24 quarter hours) of biology courses. microbiology and immunology are required. 
  • One course in mathematics is required.

Essential Functions

  • Read and write effectively.
  • Communicate verbally and in writing with patients and staff.
  • Demonstrate manual dexterity with good hand-eye coordination and  near visual acuity.
  • Hear intercom and instrument alarms.
  • Stand and sit for extended periods of time and perform repetitive motions.
  • Move freely from one area to another, including lifting up to ten pounds, and reaching over and bending around instruments.
  • See through a microscope and discriminate color reactions of special stains and other laboratory procedures.
  • Concentrate on details with frequent interruptions.
  • Wear personal protective equipment (PPE) and be aware of potential exposure to contagious diseases and chemical irritants.
  • Students indicate their ability to meet essential functions by signing the technical standards form.

Application Documents and Deadlines

The closing application date is November 1st for the class beginning the following June. If the application meets all requirements, students will be contacted for an interview.

International Applicants

An applicant who has obtained a degree outside of the United States must also meet the following criteria.

Transcript evaluation

  • If an international applicant has been awarded a degree from an educational institution outside of the United States, he or she will be required to submit a transcript evaluation performed by an approved transcript evaluation agency.
  • The program director can provide a list of approved agencies.
  • A course by course report, listing the United States equivalency for each credential and United States semester credits and grades for each course, is required. 
  • The completed evaluation should be sent directly from the agency to the program director.

English Language Skills Evaluation

  • If an international applicant’s native language is not English, he or she will be required to complete the test of English as a foreign language (TOEFL) exam.
  • An official TOEFL exam score report should be sent to the program director.
  • Spoken English language skills will be evaluated during the interview process along with TOEFL exam scores.
